Professor Cliff Beevers has taught Mathematics for over thirty years at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh and was granted the title Professor Emeritus in 2005. Cliff has worked for over two decades in the area of Computer Aided Assessment mainly in the field of Mathematics. Through projects like CALM, MathWise, Interactive PastPapers and SCHOLAR he has sought to enhance the student experience in both secondary and tertiary education. In 2003 he was awarded an OBE for his contributions to Scottish Education

Martin Montgomery is the CCEA Business Manager for the implementation of the Pupil Profile in Northern Ireland. He has worked for CCEA in its various forms since 1989. Before that, he taught English in Edmund Rice College in Belfast for eighteen years. His work in CCEA has involved the development of GCSE and GCE specifications mainly in English and the oversight and management of examinations. In 1999 he became Business Manager for Assessment Operations and Development. This post involved the management and operation of assessment at Key Stages 1-3, Transfer Test, Key Skills, ICT Accreditation Schemes as well as the development of assessment policy to support the revised curriculum. In 2001 he became Assessment Development Manager and focused on the development of assessment policy and practice to support the revised curriculum. Key features of this work have been the promotion of Assessment for Learning, teacher assessment and the development of the Annual Pupil Profile which replaces key stage assessment.. Martin is a member of the Partnership Management Board which has the job of planning and co-ordinating the implementation of the revised curriculum and assessment arrangements. This involves working with all the main educational partners in Northern Ireland. From September 2004, he has had responsibility for the implementation of the Pupil Profile in schools in Northern Ireland and the development of ICT support systems for curriculum and assessment.

Roberta Brown, Managing Director of Learning Assistant, started this innovative online portfolio company 3 years ago to address a specific market need to use the available technology to ease the delivery and assessment of vocational qualifications. Roberta’s background is in training and development where over the past 10 years she has also run the very successful management development training organisation. Bringing professionalism and enthusiasm to all projects, Roberta has a wealth of knowledge of both sides of the delivery of e-assessment being actively involved with both the development of the technology together with the application of this for the benefit of the learner.

Rosetta McLeod is SSDN Implementation Manager at Learning & Teaching Scotland and heads up the joint LTScotland/RM team with responsibility for implementing this significant and unique initiative for Scottish education. Prior to joining LTScotland, Rosetta managed education ICT in Aberdeen City Council and has wide experience of national and international ICT projects and activities. Much of her activity at the moment is ensuring that the major stakeholder groups – SEED, LTScotland, SQA, HMIE, local authorities, TEIs – have an understanding of the potential of SSDN and are working to become ready to adopt the various services.
The Scottish Schools Digital Network (SSDN) has been described as the most ambitious education ICT project anywhere in the world. The presentation will provide an overview of the rationale behind SSDN and its links with other national initiatives such as a Curriculum for Excellence. Some detailed information will be provided about the unique nature of the initiative, the various services and applications which will be provided, and the planned timescales. There will also be the chance to reflect on some of the implications of rolling out SSDN to schools and the education community across Scotland.

Craig Watt, The Rickter Company. Before joining The Rickter Company as their Director of Operations in January 2001, Craig was employed as a Consultant within the field of Social Inclusion. He was a member of the Support Unit to the Scottish Executive’s New Futures Fund Initiative. He also researched and evaluated several soft indicator systems in use throughout Scotland. Prior to this, Craig was Business Development Manager for Apex Scotland, a voluntary organisation that provides support to offenders, ex-offenders and young people at risk of offending. His role there was primarily to introduce a Court Disposal System for fine defaulters across all the Scottish Courts. He also managed a team that provided support to Scottish Employers around the area of Criminal Record disclosure. Craig contributed to the formation of the Scottish Offender Employment Forum – established with key partners from Job Centre Plus, The Scottish Prison Service, Scottish Executive, The Scottish Police Service, Scottish College’s Network, and Social Work Directorate. This Forum worked alongside the European Offender Employment Forum based in the Netherlands. Craig was one of the first to achieve an NVQ/SVQ Level IV in Criminal Justice while this Qualification was being piloted within Apex Scotland. Craig has also been involved in the training field with companies such as the Pitman Training (JHP Group), SACRO and the several Scottish Chambers of Commerce.

Dr Helen Ashton is a Lecturer in the School of Mathematical and Computer Sciences at Heriot-Watt University. Her specific area of interest is in the application of computers in education and has worked on a number of projects in this area. She has a wide range of skills and experience in both the education and technology fields. Current work in the area of online assessment includes research in the usage of such systems, the development of questions and specifications, and the advancement of delivery and reporting systems.

Matt Wingfield, Business Development Director, TAG Learning Ltd.,: Matt's background is as a qualified teacher with 7 years teaching experience at primary school level and 9 years further experience within the education ICT market. Prior to joining TAG Learning in 1997, Matt worked as a Centre Director and Director of Education for the Kingswood ICT Study Centre Group where he was tasked with both establishing and running a busy residential study centre in Norfolk, catering for over 19,000 visiting pupils per year, and implementing the ICT curricula taught at each of the Kingswood Centres around the UK. It was in this capacity that Matt was first introduced to TAG Learning, building a close strategic relationship between the companies, so as to facilitate the use of TAG software products within the courses offered by Kingswood. Matt is committed to continuing to helping TAG to develop and grow their range of innovative online assessment and moderation systems, software tools and peripheral products, so that TAG can continue helping teachers and pupils to gain the most out of using ICT as an integral part of education.

Sue Walton is Project Director for the KS3 ICT Test Development Project which is now managed by the National Assessment Agency within the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority in London. The KS3 ICT test will be the first required onscreen assessment when it becomes compulsory In England in 2008. The project has attracted a lot of interest both at home and overseas and has recently received recognition for innovation and excellence at the Computing Awards and the eGovernment Awards. Sue previously led the innovative eVIVA project for QCA which trialled the use of eportfolios at key stage 3 (ages 11-14) and included oral assessments using mobile phone technology. Prior to joining QCA Sue commissioned paper-based and electronic materials in a range of subject areas for secondary schools for a leading UK educational publishing company.
